Orchesterzentrum|NRW, CuE and Balthasar Neumann Academy

There has been cooperation between the Orchesterzentrum|NRW and the Balthasar Neumann Academy since 2018. Within the framework of the Cuban-European Youth Academy (CuE), a training and professional development programme for young musicians from Cuba and Europe which was established in 2014 by Thomas Hengelbrock and the Balthasar Neumann Academy, two projects were successfully completed with the OZM in the first year of collaboration. One of these was a huge anniversary concert in Cuba on the 500th birthday of the city of Havana, in which 13 students from NRW participated; the other was the “Barocco!” project, in which Cuban and European students worked intensively in several courses on both sides of the Atlantic with Baroque music, the playing techniques and culture of the epoch.

In the summer semester of 2019, 14 Cuban students travelled to Germany and all those involved played together three concerts with Cuban and European Baroque music. In both projects, the students were prepared and accompanied by lecturers from the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.

In 2020, six students from NRW grappled with the Classical epoch, guided by musicians of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under the motto “Clasicismo!”. A component of the project was a preparatory course in January which dealt with the piano quartets of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In February, the participants were able to play together in a chamber music workshop with the pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout and afterwards flew to a course and concert week in Havana (Cuba).

The Clasicismo project was sponsored by the Wilo Foundation, the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland as well as the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer Orchesterzentrum|NRW.
